    Welcome to The National Deaf Children's Society Family Sign Language course! In each lesson the tutors will share British Sign Language (BSL) vocabulary and conversation focused on family life, so parents and children can learn together.
    A new lesson will be released every Friday over the next 12 weeks. There will be 12 clips in total to learn from.

  • Lesson 1

    The first lesson will allow learners to:

    • Learn how to finger spell all the letters of the alphabet. 
    • Learn how to introduce themselves by finger spelling.



  • Lesson 2

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the alphabet from the previous lesson.
    • Learn how to sign members of their family.
    • Learn how to answer questions about members of their own family. 
    • Learn how to ask questions about other people's family members.




  • Lesson 3

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs for members of your family from the previous lesson.
    • Learn how to sign different words for colours which can be really useful to help identify things.
    • Learn how to use the words for colours to describe objects in sentences.



  • Lesson 4

    This lesson will allow learners to: 

    • Recap on the different signs for colours from the previous lesson.
    • Learn how to sign different words for different animals in the zoo, farm and pets.
    • Learn how to use the words to describe the different animals and to use what has been learned so far in the last 3 lessons to create sentences.




  • Lesson 5

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs for different animals from the previous lesson.
    • Learn how to sign things we do every day to describe our daily routines.
    • Learn how to use the words to describe what we or our families enjoy doing during our days.
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.





  • Lesson 6

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs for every day activities from the previous lesson.
    • Learn how to sign additional things which we do every day to describe our daily routines.
    • Learn how to use the words to describe what we or our families enjoy doing during our days.
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.




  • Lesson 7

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the additional different signs for every day activities from the previous lesson.
    • Learn the different signs related to feelings.
    • Learn how to communicate how you and others are feeling. 
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.




  • Lesson 8

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the signs related to feelings and how to communicate how you are feeling from the previous lesson.
    • Learn the different signs related to everyday conversations to allow the learners to have basic conversations with others.
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.




  • Lesson 9

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs related to everyday conversations from the previous lesson.
    • Learn how to talk about different timelines,for example; days of the week. 
    • Learn how to use the signs for timelines in everyday conversations.
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.




  • Lesson 10

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs related to timelines from the previous lesson.
    • Learn the signs in relation to talking about and describing the weather.
    • Learn how to use the signs for different weather terms in sentences.
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.






  • Lesson 11

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs related to the weather from the previous lesson.
    • Learn the signs in relation to talking about different foods and drinks.
    • Learn how to use the signs for different foods and drinks in sentences.
    • Practise their signing with activity ideas given in the video.



  • Lesson 12

    This lesson will allow learners to:

    • Recap on the different signs related to food and drinks from the previous lesson.
    • Learn more signs in relation to talking about different foods.
    • Learn how to use the signs for different foods in sentences.
